Board of Health and Human Services

The Polk County Board of Health and Human Services responsibilities include:

  • Governing the local health and human services department

  • Taking steps to assure enforcement of state public health statutes and adherence to federal and state regulations

  • Adopting regulations that it considers necessary to protect and improve health

  • Assuring measures are taken to provide an environment in which individuals can be healthy

  • Assessing public health and program service needs of the community

  • Advocating for reasonable and necessary public health and human services for Polk County citizens

  • Developing Policy and Providing leadership that:

    • fosters local involvement and commitment

    • emphasizes public health and human services needs

    • advocates for equitable distribution of public health and human services resources

Dr. Arne Lagus

Dr. Lagus has had 20 years of active participation on the Polk County Board of Health, while devoting over 50 years of his life as a family practice physician at SCRMC. He served as the Health Department’s Medical Advisor for many years, providing consultation and standing orders, and guidance and support to PCHD staff.

To quote Dr. Lagus, “The contribution I hope to make to Polk County is to develop policies that promote healthy lifestyles and healthy lives”.
